We conduct 8 community health needs assessments for the Coalition of Western MA Hospitals and Insurers. These assessments guide a wide range of priorities such as reducing substance use or strengthening maternal and child health. We use the tool to pull demographic data and information on chronic illness and mental health to help contextualize these focus areas. 

Before the Massachusetts Health Data Tool, staff spent a lot of time gathering data manually. Because hospital service areas don’t align with county boundaries, they had to pull data town by town but now, with the tool, we can view data across towns in one place, which saves an enormous amount of time. 

We use the Massachusetts Health Data Tool to support our local AHEM (Advancing Health Equity in MA) work called “Advancing Chicopee Together” especially using chronic disease data. It allows us to share information with partners and see whether the data aligns with what they’re experiencing and seeing in the community. 

We focus on rural cluster data in our region wherever possible and having those specific regions available in the Massachusetts Health Data Tool has been incredibly helpful. It directly informed the Rural Realities report with the Community Health Equity Initiative and helped map rent burden and housing affordability. The tool made it much easier to triangulate data and compare data sources. 

I just used the Massachusetts Health Data Tool to look up smoking rates in my city as compared to other communities in the region. I was able to see that the smoking rates in my city are not just higher than nearby communities but are also above the state and national average! I’ll be sharing this evidence with local officials to help advocate for continued enforcement and policy around tobacco sales to minors. 

When I receive a data request for something I don’t have readily available, I no longer need to send someone a long table or direct them to the Census website. The Massachusetts Health Data Tool makes it easy to redirect them to the data they need. 

We used the Massachusetts Health Data Tool for the state benchmarks as part of our State of the Workforce report at DPH. These benchmarks help us better understand who is working across the department.
