History Matters
Native Americans live everywhere across the state. Native Americans are diverse and multiracial. The state is also home to many Tribal Nations. The way federal and state governments recognizes Tribal Nations does not fully honor the Native American history or their rights.
Many Tribes view the land as a living, sacred space, and a source of important cultural identity. Yet many Native American families have been forced to leave their home lands. This is because federal and state officials sold Tribal lands and refused to engage in Native American Housing programs. The government’s lack of support for Native families has created many inequities.
