History Matters
The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990 is a significant law born from the disability rights movement. The ADA aims to make sure that people with disabilities are able to fully participate in society. The ADA addresses systemic barriers and prohibits discrimination across employment, education, transportation and more.
The ADA also encourages a ‘person-first’ framing. This highlights that individuals are people first and not only defined by their disability. This law promotes respect, dignity, and equity for people with disabilities. []
