After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it became against the law for colleges to discriminate against applicants because of their race, ethnicity, or gender. To reduce discrimination and increase diversity, many higher education institutions adopted affirmative action policies. These policies were meant to give groups that were historically discriminated against special consideration in the admissions process.
