Societal Factors
Societal factors examine the policies and programs that influence the social environment. Policies can change health behaviors and results. They shape what people in countries, states, and local areas think is normal and important. Policies also help close health inequities and structural racism and discrimination.
Current laws and policies at the local and state level matter for the health of people in your community. For instance, some policies give out important resources that help people make healthy choices, like making fruits and vegetables cheaper and easier to get. Policies can also limit unhealthy actions, like smoking and using other tobacco products in places where a lot of people go, like workplaces, schools, and public gathering spots.[]
