Housing and Health

Housing is where people live, whether it’s for a short time or permanently. Housing is important in preventing a lot of health problems, from asthma to depression.[] Because housing is so closely linked to health, it’s seen as one of the key social determinants of health.[] Unfortunately, housing policies and programs have not always been equitable, and as a result, the housing market is not always fair. These inequities contribute to disparities in health outcomes and behaviors. Different races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, ages, abilities, family types, and immigration statuses might have different health experiences because of disparities in housing.
