Equity Matters

On average, Black, Hispanic/Latino[], American Indian/Native Alaskan[] people, those with disabilities[], and transgender individuals tend to have fewer years of education. This is largely because of past and present laws, policies, and social and economic conditions. These have made it more difficult for them to attend or remain in school. For example, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Jim Crow laws segregated Black and white schools. Also, the way school rules are enforced by law enforcement officers has a bigger impact on Black and Brown students than on white students.
